Soweto 95

This project was set up by Africa 95, the British Council, UK DTI and the RLPS.
Graham led 8 players from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in a series of workshops at Pelmama Academy of Music and Art in Soweto, South Africa. The students, aged 16 -35, were part of the Soweto Youth Jazz Orchestra programme and most had had no opportunity to learn any musical instruments before joining Pelmama. Their progress was outstanding and matched by their enthusiaism and eagerness to learn.
The workshops included opportunities to share and discuss music from different cultures, learn from each other and perform new work together. The work culminated in an informal concert performance.
This was intended as a one-off visit but developed into a longer term relationship between the borough of Sefton and Pelmama, including exchange visit, due in large part to the hard work of Geoff Reed and Mokale Kwapeng.
